Better Foundation = Better Shooting
A big topic people have been discussing as of late is Tension. This is my take on Tension and how to better use your body structure to control your gun:
While you don’t want any unnecessary Tension…a certain amount is necessary to control the gun in recoil and transition. WHERE you put the tension is the important part here, and using better body mechanics makes this much more efficient. By using your LATS and core, rather than your shoulders and arms (or worse neck), you can better stabilize the gun both in recoil and transition. My video illustrates this below.
I call it a Foundation because it is a lot more than your “grip”…in fact I’ve met people with fantastic grips but a Poor foundation. The Foundation allows you to better control recoil without conscious effort, as well as allow for better transitions. Your Lats and Core muscles are not only stronger or more stable, they don’t interfere with your hands for your grip or your trigger like your shoulders, arms, or neck.
Moving and Shooting is another place this Foundation helps you. Essentially, using your core to hold your gun allows for better “shock absorption” than using your shoulders and neck. While the main shock absorption happens below this waist with your knees and hips- this helps above the waist while allowing more efficient control.
Additionally, This Foundation also allows you to take advantage of your own brain. By “turtle-ing” your neck and shoulders forward, you naturally induce a tunnel vision effect as well as the feeling of time distortion- both of which are TERRIBLE for shooting at high levels. Picking your head up more naturally allows better visual and mental processing which mentally allows for better Target Focus as Visual Transitions. This is a long winded way of saying this better Foundation allows you to “See Faster” which is GOLD in the world of Performance Shooting.
